On Women’s day empower your daughters

Standard

Since I was a child, I can remember being told that I needed to learn how to cook and iron to find a husband. Then I started to come across these oh so cool teen magazines telling young girls what to do to keep a man, to make a man happy or to keep him from leaving, and I always wondered if men magazines were educating them on how to treat a lady. Only to realize that nope ” Men will be men” and we need to suck it up and do what it takes to keep one. Society molds young women to be feeling inferior and insecure trying to tell them that if they don’t conform it is normal to be cheated on or mistreated.

And if you think about it, females throughout history have been beaten down, downtrodden, and been made to feel stupid. All females are at the effect of this history. It has been part of our society to consider females dumber. This bias has been passed down from generation to generation, and it doesn’t come only from the males, it comes from the females of the prior generations as well. They bought into the conditioning and passed it on to their children. Although it is not true that women are dumber, many societies believe that is true, and both sexes perpetuate that belief.

Teach your daughters to know their worth and to be the best version of themselves. Teach her that she can tame the dragon, splits the atom, owns the castle, and do it all in a really comfortable pair of shoes.  Let her grow up idolizing women who were called “bossy” and “difficult” and “unconventional,” without feeling like she should apologies for it. Let your daughters learn the value of being self-motivated, self-reliant, and self-loved. Allow your daughters to grow up without the subtle weight of being “just a girl” that is historically thrust upon us with a smile and a pat on the head.

Fuck The International Women’s day

Standard

Yesterday, we celebrated the international women’s day, alas I wished the whole believed in the meaning of this day.

Can you tell me why crimes against women are brushed aside in the media? Why nothing more is done to protect women from abusive spouses? Why there are so few shelters for homeless women and women fleeing situations like this? Why violence against women is considered a lesser crime?  Why women’ rape is a misdemeanor, victim-shaming, and victim-blaming? Why when a woman speak up and raise her voice is called a whore?

Don’t you know, in some countries and cultures, raped women are forced to marry their assaulter or how many women are beaten or even murdered by their husbands on their first night because they weren’t virgin?  Do you know that walking by myself at night is never safe?  Do you know I spend hours thinking of what would be “safe” to wear?

And what about these whistles every time we are walking on the street?! What’s the purpose of these whistles? We are not some kind of pets who’s willing to go running after some guys with high hormones, but I guess when the wolf goes for a stroll, all the dogs start barking.

So yeah, fuck the international women’s day, I don’t find a reason to celebrate this day. Women are not second class citizens. We are not breeding tools for your war machine, or vessels for your property. We are people, and deserve the same rights as everyone else. I am a woman, therefore I am a goddess, a warrior, a fighter, a lioness.

Because we’re Women

Standard

Words by Joyce Stevens© 1975

Because women’s work is never done and is underpaid or unpaid or boring or repetitious
and we’re the first to get the sack
and what we look like is more important than what we do
and if we get raped it’s our fault
and if we get bashed we must have provoked it
and if we raise our voices we’re nagging bitches
and if we enjoy sex we’re nymphos
and if we don’t we’re frigid
and if we love women it’s because we can’t get a ‘real’ man
and if we ask our doctor too many questions we’re neurotic and pushy
and if we expect community care for children we’re selfish
and if we stand up for our rights we’re aggressive and ‘unfeminine’
and if we don’t we’re typical weak females
and if we want to get married we’re out to trap a man
and if we don’t we’re unnatural
and because we still can’t get an adequate safe contraceptive but men can walk on the moon
and if we can’t cope or don’t want a pregnancy we’re made to feel guilty about abortion
and ….. for lots and lots of other reasons we are part of the women’s liberation movement.
