The Freedom Illusion

We live in a world where, we can be fired by what we post online, for what our hobbies are, and for being an actual individual when we are off the clock. Books like “1984” and movies like “V for Vendetta” can only get the ideals of a broken society correct, but by the time literature or a movie become classic, they are buried under the actual dated assumption by which they will actually be introduced. The prediction of results however, will always be the same, and apparently too late to notice until our freedoms are destroyed.

This time, those freedoms are under a buffer-barrier. The basis of speech is free but the mediums at which we are allowed to talk never are. For instance, Facebook has become the facilitator for our communication, but because the medium platform that we are able to get the word out is owned, we are regulated due to such ownership.

In my country, people who spread fake news, orchestrate massive hate and racism campaigns on the internet, send rape threats and death threats and spread every sort of bile go scot- free; while people who spread the truth and fight for the right are either sentenced to jail, end up losing their job, or get death and rape threats. Doesn’t take a genius to figure out why.

  1. Beautiful and true. In the last few years in our country too we have lost lot of freedom to tell our truth. It hurts.
    Freedom has always been the most important driver in my life.
    Hoping things will change

    • It’s getting worse everywhere, even in most “claimed” democratic countries, freedom is abuse on daily basis. Freedom should be important as breathing air is; sadly sometimes people forget that. I wish things will go better in your country, but for me I lost hope long time in my country

      • I really hope it will get better everywhere. As for my country alas if you know the situation in here, you will realize you cannot change anything we are doomed, but I really hope things will turn out better for the next generation

      • It saddens me so much to hear and see such things Nadine. But we still need to do the best we can. I shall keep you in my prayers🙏
        And you know at another level – None of us are free. We are all a part of, what I call – A Madness Matrix! Even the so called free world is completely controlled by a handful of individuals or families; who control all banking, media, defence and Pharma industry. One of these days I shall write a post about this.
        Wishing you peace and happiness despite all the adverse situations.

Same in my country only few people and families held all the money and power, while the remaining majority are just mere sheep for them. I hope you will it, will be a great read for us all.

  2. It’s really amazing how close Orwell got it in 1984, especially with the line “Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two makes four. If that is granted, all else follows.” Today, we can’t speak the truth, and the definition of truth changes. Just like 1984.

    • It is really freighting how 1984 is becoming a reality, George Orwell was a genius no doubt!! Love that quote ❤ We cannot speak the truth because of censorship and every word we say is being watched, and sometimes the truth is lost since some people are afraid to say it, or it is lost amongst hate campaign

  3. What an hypocrite society! Things don’t change they are the same, money power and hypocrisy rule and honesty and respect and education are persecuted! It will always be the case but there will always be people who say NO and insist even if this costs them their life!
    V for Vendetta is a great movie, don’t know the story but I can imagine the content, here they let you speak because you can’t affect a thing! And when they feel threatened they just arrest you…

    • I wonder if there is a word stronger than “hypocrite” to describe our society perfectly. Sadly. Honest and hard-working people are becoming bottom-line jokes in our country, while thieves and oppressors are idolized. Yes there will always people who say “No”, but I am afraid the “No” will always remain without action or without huge effect, we will always remain in this status-quo or even worse. V for Vendetta is a great one, wait does that mean you haven’t read 1984 by George Orwell?! =( Yes they will let us talk sometimes, but sometimes if you dare to criticize deghreh by2lbowa ta2ifiyeh w and they start a hate campaign towards you, wl sheeps yalli 3enna bisad2ou

      • This world needs to be burned so we can start over saraha I don’t see it getting any better!
        What matters are money power and beauty otherwise everything is ridiculed and trivial
        We need revolution and it’s not possible in our country or maybe anywhere

Min wa2ta ana zghireh dayman bi sma3 inou el harab rah terja3, aslan hiyeh ma nthahet bas 3am n3ish el kezbeh. Yay you bought Kawabis Beirut, now I forgive you for not reading 1984. 1984 is a great dystopian novel. 1984 along with other dystopian books such as animal farm, fahreneit 451, and brave new world shaped the way I think. One day you should read George Orwell either 1984 or Animal Farm, you can start. Exactly fanatics everywhere they want to control every little aspects of our life.
        No hope in this mankind mesh 3a iyemna at least<< one of the reason I don’t want to bring a child certainly not in this shithole country
